The brian lara Challenge

What is it?

In June 1994, West Indian batsman Brian Lara set a record which still stands today. He achieved the highest ever first-class score: 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham.

During that innings he scored 10X sixes and 62X fours in an innings that lasted 7 hours and 7 minutes. Including runs for his partners, he also ran 322 times which equates to 7084 yards, or 4.025 miles.

We are challenging all Platform Cricket Silver Award participants to replicate this amazing feat!

Just grab a bat and run 322 X 22 yards.

This might be all in one go, or it might be spread over a number of sessions (maybe get a family member to help you measure and record the distances you cover).

It might be on your own or in a group. You might even be able to convince your teachers to help you and your classmates to do it at breaktime in school.

It might be at home in your garden, it might be along a street pavement, or in a public park/space. If you have an artificial cricket pitch in your local park, you might even use that to do 22 yard shuttles and make it extremely realistic!

Why should I do it?

HEALTH

Any sustained jogging of this type helps improve physical fitness, muscle strength and bone strength, as well as maintaining a healthy weight. It also improves mood, cognitive function, sleep and long-term health.

CITIZENSHIP

Fundraising can be a fun and positive activity which helps children develop personally and emotionally. It encourages ideas around fairness, empathy and compassion. It also helps children to understand themselves as British and global citizens.

In exchange for your efforts, you can ask friends and family to sponsor you in order to raise funds for children to continue realising the benefits of play, sport and physical activity through Platform Cricket (London) and Right to Play (Global).

Why are we partnering with Right to Play?

We are firmly committed to Article 31 of the UN Rights of the Child:

  • Children have the right to rest and leisure
  • They have the right to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to their age
  • They should have free access to artistic and cultural activities

Right To Play is a fantastic global charity, working in 14 countries to champion these rights and support children’s learning and well-being through play. They harness the power of play to transform children’s lives both inside and outside the classroom.

You can find out more on their website: https://righttoplay.org.uk

Next Steps

  1. Follow this link and get an adult to help set up your personal Justgiving page, linked to our Brian Lara Challenge Campaign:

We recommend you try to fundraise for 2-4 weeks before starting your challenge.
  2. Do it!
Get an adult to help you plan when and where you will clock-up your distances. If you need to borrow a cricket bat, ask your coach or teacher.
  3. Keep us and your supporters informed on your progress.

You can post photos, videos and updates on your Justgiving page, but if your family uses social media, they could also post about your challenge and can tag us on X, Instagram and/or Facebook. Use the hashtag #BrianLaraChallenge.
