Thamesmead was originally conceived as a modern, purpose-built housing estate to relocate families whose inner London residences were being demolished as part of urban renewal in the 1960s. Many of the estate's features were radical and brutalist in style, and it has frequently been utilised as a filming location.
In recent times Thamesmead has become synonymous with immigration, particularly from West African countries such as Nigeria.
Thamesmead Tigers community cricket sessions are predominantly for children attending Bishop John Robinson, Castilion, Discovery, Hawksmoor, Heronsgate (Thamesmead), Jubilee, Linton Mead, St Margaret's Clitherow and Windrush (Thamesmead) Primary Schools.
